Common Sense Gun Safety

Keeping our communities safe is one of my highest priorities as a public official and as a citizen. As a parent of two school-age children, I have a persistent fear about where the next shooting will take place, and whether we are doing all we can to protect our kids–and all of us–from preventable harm.

I am proud to have twice received both the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction and the endorsement of the Gun Violence Prevention PAC. Since being elected in 2022 I have worked with my colleagues to pass common sense gun laws, including the Safe Gun Storage Act, strengthening safe storage requirements in homes where a firearm could be accessed by a minor, an at-risk person, or someone otherwise prohibited from using firearms, and requiring every law enforcement agency in Illinois to participate in the federal firearm tracing platform eTrace.

  • Working to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines

  • Establishing a commission to tackle interstate and intrastate gun trafficking

  • Requiring handgun safety training for FOID applicants

  • Closing loopholes that allow perpetrators whose FOID card has been revoked from transferring firearms to immediate family members by requiring them to surrender their guns to law enforcement officials for a minimum of two years

  • Closing loopholes that allow perpetrators whose FOID card has been revoked from purchasing ammunition

  • Improving training and education on Red Flag laws for Illinois law enforcement officials

  • Supporting public awareness campaigns promoting safe storage of guns in a gun safe or with a locking device
